Welcome Speech - Professor Richard Gilbertson
Plenary Speaker - Professor Bissan Al-Lazikani
Professor Charles Swanton is Cancer Research UK's Chief Clinician. He and his team at the Francis Crick Institute are using the latest DNA sequencing technology to read the genetic makeup of cancer cells within tumours in ever greater detail, teasing out patterns of evolution (evolutionary rule books), cancer heterogeneity and working out what changes have happened as a tumour evolves. Professor Swanton is also leading an ambitious clinical study called TRACERx, analysing in unprecedented detail how lung cancers from 850 patients change at the genetic level over time, from diagnosis and throughout treatment. The results will transform our understanding of lung cancer and how we treat the disease.
Professor Bissan Al-Lazikani is Head of Data Science at the Institute of Cancer Research. There she leads the Big Data efforts to tackle key problems in Cancer drug discovery and Cancer therapy. Bissan led the development of integrative computational approaches to inform drug discovery that are now internationally adopted and provided to the community via the canSAR knowledgebase. She applies data science and machine learning approaches to the discovery of novel therapies and pharmacological and radiation to adapting and individualising therapy to patients. Bissan has a B.Sc (Hons) in Molecular Biology from University College London, an M.Sc in Computer Science from Imperial College and a PhD in Computational Biology from Cambridge University. Bissan has worked on drug discovery and personalised medicine both in academia and industry.
Dr. Emily Grossman is an internationally acclaimed science author, public speaker and TV personality. She is an expert in molecular biology and genetics, with a Double First in Natural Sciences from Queens' College Cambridge and a PhD in cancer research. Emily has also trained and worked as an actress and singer, and as a maths and science teacher.
She now combines her skills as a science broadcaster, writer, educator and trainer.
Plenary Speaker - Professor Charles Swanton
Professor Richard Gilbertson trained as a paediatric oncologist in the UK where he earned his MBBS and PhD degrees, becoming a member of the Royal College of Physicians in 1995. He moved to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, TN, USA in 2000 where, in 2014, he was appointed as the Scientific Director.
In August 2015, he moved back home to England where he now serves as the
Li Ka-shing Chair of Oncology, Head of Department of Oncology and Director of the CRUK Cambridge Centre at the University of Cambridge. His laboratory research is focused on understanding the link between normal development and the origins of cancer, particularly brain tumours.
